Former President HR, JSW Group

Gautam Chainani is a senior Human Capital Executive with over three decades’ experience in leading the HR function at national & global levels. His industry expertise encompasses a wide range of industries such as IT/Telecom, FMCG, Financial Service and Manufacturing. He is currently pursuing his doctorate program from IIM, focusing on Smart Manufacturing and its implications for Strategic Human Resource Management in influencing change.

Gautam is currently Advisor to Epsilon Carbon Pvt Ltd. He has been working with the Promoter as well as the Senior leadership team in Organizational transformational work to build the business in India as well as establish a global footprint. He is also working with a renewable company in Organization wide transformation

Till recently he was President, HR Strategic Initiatives at the JSW Group, involved in large scale Mergers & Acquisitions of stressed assets, as well as driving HR transformation at the Plant level. In addition, he is involved in post-merger integration work related to the recent acquisition of Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd. (BPSL), a 3.5 mtpa plant in Orissa, and in setting up a technology platform company, JSW One Platform Ltd involved in sales distribution to SME . MSME and IHB customers. He is also involved in the growth and transformation of an unlisted promoter business in Specialty / Advanced Carbons.

Prior to April 2020, Gautam was Group President-HR of JSW Group, a $12 billion conglomerate with presence across India, the USA, South America & Africa. The JSW Group is part of the O.P. Jindal Group with established footprints across diverse sectors like Steel, Energy, Infrastructure, Cement, Ventures and Sports. He was responsible for the entire gamut of Human Resource functions across the JSW Group companies in its Global Operations. He is also on the Board of JSW Retail Company, a subsidiary of JSW Steel Ltd.

Prior to joining JSW Group, Gautam was the Chief Human Resource Officer and Head, Corporate Communications for UltraTech Cement Limited (UTCL), Aditya Birla Group (ABG). He was associated with ABG from 2007 to 2016. At UTCL, he set up the state-of-the-art 100,000 sq ft Technology Training Centre at Aditya Cements. He was involved in the post-merger integration of Jaiprakash Associates cement capacity of 21.2 million tonnes. At UTCL, he also worked closely with the leadership team in the planned organic expansion of the business.

Gautam joined Aditya Birla Group from American Express India Ltd., as Vice President-HR for India and Pakistan. He initially joined AB Group as CHRO for the Financial Services Business where he worked closely with Ajay Srinivasan in building the Financial Services Business across Lending businesses, Pvt Equity (including Real Estate), Insurance Broking, Wealth management in addition to being involved in growing the Insurance Business and the Asset Management Business respectively. He was involved in the acquisition of Apollo Sindhoori, which was in major player in the South in Equity and Commodity broking (Aditya Birla Money).

 At American Express, he was involved in the sale of the Amex Banking business (AEB) to Standard Chartered Bank. In addition, he was part of the leadership team that launched the Amex Platinum Card in India.

Gautam completed his Masters in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from Mumbai University. He started his professional career with DCM Data Products Limited in Delhi and worked in HR Leadership roles in organizations like Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Wipro Consumer Products, Hughes Telecom Limited, WNS Global Services Limited & American Express. He served on the board of American Express (India) Pvt Ltd and with a WNS Global Services subsidiary.
